Ittehad Airlines was fined Tk 3 lakh by the Magistrate Court of HazratShahjalal International Airport. Their crime was that Etihad Airlines transferred them to another airline flight without informing the passenger about the overbook booking on their flight, without paying the due compensation. Even though the ticket was on the flight at 10.45 pm, he came to the airport and saw that their names were not on the list of passengers on that flight. With more news, they can find out that they have been transferred to another airline (Gulf Air) flight the next morning. This was done with a total of 6 passengers. The passengers fell into a big harassment. Eventually the incident took place in the airport magistrate's court. While searching, Executive Magistrate Muhammad Yusuf found an exceptional incident.

Now the question is whether it is possible for all passengers to know such detailed rules and regulations? In response to this question, Executive Magistrate Muhammad Yusuf said-   ‘In the case of Ittehad, we found a fancy method of harassing passengers. When they shift a passenger to another airline, the rule is to take the passenger's opinion in order to do so. Hold on, I got a ticket to Ittehad. Because it's my choice. I believe that if I travel on this airline I will be able to go to my destination safely or the service of this airline is my choice. But you put me on another airline - it won't happen. In that case, the opinion of the passenger must be taken. Then if he agrees, you will shift him. But instead of doing that, what has been done here - there was overbooking so the Central Office (not even the local office was notified) shifted the passenger to Gulf Air.

Passengers don't even know it, not even the local office. The passenger did not know the difference in the price of the tickets of the two airlines, nor did he get the compensation he was supposed to get due to the transfer, nor could he say whether he would board the flight of the airlines or not. In all, there have been 3 types of irregularities. This is fancy because you can't find out their irregularity if you want to. If you go to their system, if you say that - out of how many people you have shifted from this flight - but you will not find in their system. You will see the book load, there will be how many people are going i.e. how many people are booked on this flight.   With so many people, they shifted to golf. But after shifting, they do not exist in this bookload. You will not find any of them in the Ittehad system.

My guess is that there are some passengers who are happy to go. Far be it from me to protest, happy to be able to go. Airlines take this opportunity in their case. It did it from their head office, which is nowhere to be found. Tracing the only passenger's ticket number indicates that it has been shifted to another location. '   In the wake of this incident, Executive Magistrate Muhammad Yusuf gave detailed information about overbooking on the flight. He said it was a matter of who could do the overbooking. Not all airlines will be able to overbook. There are some budget airlines that sell one-time tickets at low prices  miss it means absolutely miss. Again there are some good airlines whose tickets are missed, not missed at once. You can use the ticket for up to one year. But every time you don't come or miss the exact date, you have to pay a charge. The ticket has to be re-issued with a charge. In that case the passenger seat is supposed to be empty.

Airlines may face losses. Airlines can overbook as a solution to this. But even then there are conditions. It remains to be seen how many passengers are missing on average in each of the last 6 months. By averaging exactly 6 empty seats, there are rules for overbooking that amount and it will not be more than 5 percent of the total capacity. Suppose a flight has a capacity of 300 passengers. Then 5% of those 300 people can be overbooked.   Now the question is, if no one was missing on any flight. The overbooked passenger came again. What will happen then? There are three processes in that. He must talk to the passenger in order to do any of these. Can talk in advance or talk when the passenger goes to the counter. Take an envelope directly and tell the passenger that - Sir, we can't pick you up because of overbooking. But it is valid. There are several options open to you for this.

The options are-

  • The first offer may be - the airline authorities will tell the passenger, our next flight at this time, at this time we can take you. If you go at that time, we will arrange for your accommodation and we will pay you this amount as compensation. In the case of Ittehad, the compensation is above 200 or Rs 16,000. This is for economy class. About 300 for business class. This is called Denied Boarding Compensation or DBC.

  • Then the second option is to tell the passenger - if you want to go on a flight of another airline due to your schedule without going to our flight, if there is a vacancy in another airline, we will arrange it for you. I will take you to your destination with that. It depends on the route to the other 6 destinations, on the airlines and on the other airlines. In that case, if there is a difference in the ticket price of those two airlines, that is, if the ticket of the next airline is cheaper, then we will give you the gap in the middle. With DBC you will get ঐ 200 or 16 thousand rupees.

  • The airlines will tell the passenger that since we cannot send you due to overbooking, you can withdraw the full amount of the ticket (no charge will be deducted) if you do not agree to any of the above two offers. In that case we will give you 200 of DBC and if you apply for a refund you will get a refund of the ticket money.
Now the question is whether it is possible for all passengers to know such detailed rules and regulations? In response to this question, Executive Magistrate Muhammad Yusuf said-   Whether the passenger knows or not, you have to pay for the service you have promised. Harassment has become a habit for a long time due to lack of law enforcement. There is no need for the passenger to know everything. And it is not possible for a passenger to keep so much information. If the passenger has purchased a service package, the airlines must comply with what is in it.

However, passengers must have an idea about their rights.   It seems to me that when a lower class airline commits misdeeds, but most of these are caught in the eye of the beholder. But in the case of sophisticated airlines, I have seen that their theft is also sophisticated. Not very easily caught. They also harass passengers who will not protest.   So what will the passengers do if they are the victims of such an incident?   "If you tell anyone at the airport, the magistrate court will show you."
