History of Comilla District

Comilla, officially known as Cumilla District is a district of Bangladesh that is located about 100 kilometers south-east of Dhaka.

Comilla, officially known as Cumilla District is a district of Bangladesh that is located about 100 kilometers south-east of Dhaka. Specifically, it is situated just at the south of Gumti River which is a tributary of the Meghna river. Now Comilla is under Chittagong Division. Chandpur and Brahmanbaria were its subdivision and they were transformed into districts in 1984. It is about 3146.3 square kilometers and its population is approximately 5387288. It has 5 municipalities, 54 wards, 148 mahallas, 12 Upazilas, 1 thana, 180 union parishads, 2704 Mouzas, and 3624 villages. The district is bordered by Noakhali and Feni District at the south, the Tripura State of India at east, Munshiganj and Chadpur Districts at the west, and Brahmanbaria and Narayanganj Districts at the north.

History

Once upon a time, Comilla was a part of the Tripura kingdom. In 1733, nawab Sujauddin Khan attacked the Tripura kingdom and a plain part of it was included with Subah Bangla. East India Company captured Tripura kingdom and also appointed a caretaker. In 1790, British Government transformed Tripura into a district. Again, after getting divided the country (Pakistan and India) in 1960, Tripura District was renamed as Comilla. There are many thoughts and sayings regarding the naming history of Comilla. Though, at first, it was a part of Somotot, after that it became a part of the Tripura kingdom. Among the sayings about the names, the saying of China pilgrim Owang Choong that he wrote in his travel story is noteworthy. He mentioned a place named Kia-Mol-Inkiya in his description and it is thought that from that name, the district name of Comilla was found. To say about the history of the liberation war, during the war, Comilla was included in sector number 2. At the end of June month of the year, 18 Pakistani armies got died while fighting with the freedom fighters near Chokarmar pool at Brahmanpara Upazila.


Again, on 31st March, 33 Bengali freedom fighters got died at the Comilla-Sylhet highway of Debidar. At the end of July month, When Pakistani army tried to enter Joypur village by streamer on the way of Titas river. Freedom fighters attacked them with their weapons and the Pakistani army failed to enter the village and also went away to Machimpur. On 2nd September, Pakistani armies entered into Borura Upazila and attacked the camp of freedom fighters, and also killed 6 innocent people. On 28th November, Pakistani armies seized Jogonnath-lake camp and while having a war at different times at Choddagram Upazila, they killed 25 freedom fighters. Moreover, on 11th December at Chondina Upazila, about 1800 Pakistani armies surrendered themselves before the freedom fighters, and on 12th December, while having a war 7 Pakistani armies got died and 3 freedom fighters also lost their lives at a certain place named Kottola of Chandina.
