Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden is a well-received effort by the State Government of West Bengal to maintain the ecological balance of Kolkata. The Botanical Garden was established at Shibpur on the banks of the Hooghly River in 18 to promote the vegetation of India. The Botanical Garden covers an area of ​​about 110 hectares and consists of endangered plants and vegetation.  

History of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden

 In Shibpur, Howrah, near Kolkata, the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, renowned as the Botanical Garden, is a vast garden covering an area of 273 acres. The Botanical Garden contains about 12,000 living plants, and the pharmacy contains more than 2.5 million dried plant specimens collected from around the world.   The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden, founded by Colonel Alexander Kidd of the East India Country, was set up to collect native plants and to accustom exotic plants to the climate here.   The main tourist attraction of the Botanical Garden is a 250-year-old tree known as Ficus benghalensis. The tree is about 96 feet high and has a perimeter of about 1300 feet - which is a rare sight for tourists.   In the year 1787, the gardens were developed and were publicly recognized at that period as Company Garden. It is currently underneath the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) of the Government of India's Ministry of Environment and Forests.   Today, with elongated land topography and spectacular man-made lakes, the dynamic garden is deemed to be one of the most beautiful tropical grounds in the entire world. Visiting this region and enjoying some pleasant and relaxing time in the beauty of nature in the gardens is a sheer joy for outdoor enthusiasts.

Attractions of Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden 

Guava trees, conifer trees, lychee trees, Cuban palms, mahogany trees, multi - colored bamboo trees, Sicilian coconut trees, mad tree, orchids, Brazilian branching palms, various kinds of cacti, bougainvillea, bamboo, citrus, pandanus, jasmine, water lilies, pine trees, creepers, seedling, lavender and a host of other aquatic, floricultural and arboriculture plants are also housed in the garden.   The BreadFruit Tree, Giant Water Lilies, Double Coconut, Krishnabot, Giant Water Lilies and the Shivalinga Tree include some of its most rare plants that can be identified here. There is also a sinuous lake throughout the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Gardens where people can enjoy boat rides. There is also a comprehensive and outstanding collection of books in the library at the Botanical Garden.

The park is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The great time to travel to the Botanical Garden is from October to March.    

How to reach  ‘Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose’ Indian Botanic Garden

  You can conveniently rent a cheap vehicle or a cab to the gardens. On the Howrah side of the Hooghly River, the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden is situated on the West Side of the City Center of Kolkata. It is advisable to use a private car or a taxi to get there.   You can also jump on any city bus that says "B Garden" but at the gateway to the garden it will drop you. The Shalimar Railway Station seems to be the nearest to the garden, but with the exception of Santragachi, it is not linked to any of the regional railway stations in Kolkata.   There are no metro transfers or other options to commuter trains which will drop you off at or around the Botanical Gardens.
