Ekushey Book Fair: The for the martyr of 21st February Language Movement

A book can enlighten a person with knowledge and wisdom. A book may provide the real feeling of sadness or happiness through the stories. Therefore we can see the importance of reading books. As Bangladesh is the center of different types of fairs, one of the most important fairs is the book fair or Amaar Ekushey Boi Mela, which means 'The Immortal Book Fair' remembering the 21st February. This is the national book fair of Bangladesh. This fair is arranged every year with the effort of Bangla Academy. This is an organization founded and funded by the Bangladesh government to promote the Bengali language, literature, and different types of policy regarding the language of Bangladesh. This institution was founded in 1955 on the ground of Dhaka University. Since then it is performing a crucial role concerning the Bengali language. One of the important events of this institution is this book fair which is visited by thousands of people from different parts of the country. A crowd of foreign peoples is also noteworthy in this book fair. This fair is arranged for February month of every year and continues for the whole month.


This fair arrangement and cultural programs are dedicated to the people who were martyred on 21st February of 1952 protesting and demanding Bangla as the state language the then East Pakistan. One of the remarkable publishing houses known as Muktodhara took the initiative and arranged quotes feeling of the books in front of the Bangla Academy. The step was taken by Chittaranjan Shah. The other publishing house also joined this step and it took its form, became official and one of the largest fairs of Bangladesh. Bangla Academy took the charge of this fair in 1978. At first, this was only marked as the National Book Fair but by the passing of time, this fair has turned into the cultural festival and spirit of the Bengali people. Different types of programs are also arranged in the book fair which includes cultural events and competitions which increases the promotion of the Bengali language and love towards it. There is no entry fee to visit this place. Throughout the month people are seen to be visiting this place with much enthusiasm and patriotic engagement. The large crowd is seen on the weekends and it creates the opportunity for the union of the writers and the readers. They could spend well times discussing books and sharing knowledge in this wonderful premise. People are most likely to gather in this place on 21st February with friends and family and celebrate the day and show respect towards the people who laid their life for the sake of the Bengali language. Anyone from different parts of Dhaka and outside Dhaka can visit this place simply by visiting the Dhaka University area.
