Bangladesh Open University was born on 20 October 1992 by the law enacted by the National Parliament of Bangladesh. It is a public university. The university has two types of the education system on campus (City Campus, Dhaka) and Outer Campus (Study Centers). Bangladesh Open University is particularly committed to building a well-educated and self-reliant nation by making the creation, practice, and development of knowledge and science more people-oriented and life-sustaining through the use of multifaceted education technology. The main campus of Bangladesh Open University is located in Board Bazar of Gazipur district north of Dhaka city.Also, the university has 12 regional centers, 60 coordinating offices, and a vast network of more than 1,000 tutorial centers across the country for organizing educational activities. The university has seven academic faculties and 11 administrative departments for conducting educational and administrative activities. According to the Bangladesh Open University Act (1992), all the activities of the University are conducted by the decisions and policies of the Board of Governors, Academic Council, School, Curriculum Committee, Finance Committee, etc.

Currently, BSc in Computer Engineering, BSc in Nursing, MSc in DMR, MSc in Software Engineering, LLB Honors, BBA, MBA, EMBA, and BSc in Agriculture courses are offered in various subjects.
