Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University is the first medical university in Bangladesh better known as PG Hospital. Before becoming a university, it was called the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research.

The Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR) was established in Dhaka in 1975 to provide postgraduate courses in medical education. Although responsible for postgraduate education and research, the institute could not award degrees. It was assigned to Dhaka University. The University of Dhaka used to offer MBBS degrees in many medical colleges including IPGMR activities. It was transformed into a full-fledged medical university by a parliamentary ordinance on 30 April 1997. Although the MBBS course was introduced, the institution used to offer only postgraduate education. The new university was named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The university has a hospital to provide high-quality medical care. The founding vice-chancellor was Professor Qadri. The university has a total of five multi-storey buildings; Blocks A, B, C, D, and Cabin Blocks. Education, research, and medicine run parallel in this medical university. Administrative offices are open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., except on Fridays and public holidays.Location
